At 17 years old, Cari Fletcher stood in front of Simon Cowell on The X Factor stage. He called her audition of “Alone” by Heart “boring.” Fast forward a decade later and the 27-year-old is lighting up Spotify with her original music. Her latest release “girls girls girls” is inspired by Katy Perry’s 2008 hit, “I Kissed a Girl.”

Cari ended up being put into the girl group Lakoda Rayne on The X Factor. The group finished the competition in ninth place. Cari now works under the artist name FLETCHER. She realized that she does have the confidence to be a solo artist. Her new song, “girls girls girls” incorporates the chorus from “I Kissed a Girl” with a new funky beat. FLETCHER’s decision to reimagine the pop anthem came from years of wanting to celebrate her queer identity.

FLETCHER Releases New Single ‘girls girls girls’

“I remember my mom was dropping me off at school one day in 2008 and ‘I Kissed a Girl’ came on the radio, and my mom kind of gasped at the lyrics,” FLETCHER said in a press release. “I had this moment in my head where I was like, ‘F*ck, I think I might like girls.’ In a lot of ways that song really marked the beginning of a lifelong journey of self-exploration and coming into my queerness and learning how to express my truth in a bold and unapologetic way.”

FLETCHER released “girls girls girls” along with a visualizer on YouTube. The comments are full of fans thanking her for rewriting Perry’s popular anthem. The original 2008 song had such a huge impact on so many people’s lives and so will “girls girls girls.” Even drawing inspiration from another song, FLETCHER still manages to make “girls girls girls” sound original and authentic. Her voice is angelic and her storytelling is impeccable.

She continued on to say that “girls girls girls” is the “freedom and the celebration” that she has been “craving.” FLETCHER released her seven-track EP, The S(ex) Tapes, last year. The song “Bitter” currently has over 92 million streams on Spotify. It followed the success of her 2019 hit “Undrunk” that landed on the Billboard Hot 100 and at No. 1 on Spotify’s Viral Chart. “Undrunk” earned 140 million streams on Spotify and “girls girls girls” will likely find the same success.
